A new resource that provides valuable instruction to Georgia forest landowners on the sale of timber is now featured on the Georgia Forestry Commission website. The webinar, titled "Selling Your Timber," is available on demand at GaTrees.org.
According to Georgia Forestry Commission Forest Management Chief James Johnson, instruction on this topic is essential because many costly mistakes can occur during the process of executing a timber sale and conducting a harvest.
"Don't make a 30 minute mistake that took 30 years to grow," advised Johnson. "This video, along with the many other publications offered by the Georgia Forestry Commission and services of consulting foresters across the state, can help landowners make these critical decisions to protect themselves and their property."
Information covered in the online video includes the importance of hiring a registered consulting forester to help with forest management planning and timber sales, determining the best selling method, executing a contract, conducting the harvest and closing out the sale. A supplementary brochure, also available at GaTrees.org, provides condensed guidelines in an easy to review format.
"This is a critical message to get out to Georgia landowners," said Johnson. "Our foresters serve a great number of customers in person, but the internet increases our reach tremendously. The 'Selling Your Timber' video is a must-see for every person who owns forest land and is considering a future harvest. Landowners who educate themselves before they attempt to sell timber normally avoid situations that leave them less than satisfied."
