Metro Atlanta shoppers can find fresh Georgia Grown vegetables at the Whole Foods Market in Buckhead, thanks for a new relationship between the grocery company and Local Vendors Coalition, an association dedicated to helping Georgia farmers market their produce.
Whole Foods Market, a national grocery company committed to selling the highest quality products available, will feature Georgia Grown vegetables ranging from arugula to rutabagas at its store at 77 West Paces Ferry Rd. in metro Atlanta.
"Whole Foods shares our goal of providing fresh, quality products with the convenience of shopping at your local grocery store," says President Matt Granados, who founded Local Vendors Coalition to support Georgia farmers. "The relationship between Whole Foods and Local Vendors Coalition is a plus for everyone - we are helping Georgia farmers find local markets and helping customers find the fresh, locally grown produce they want."
Local Vendors Coalition, an Atlanta-based marketing association, handles the logistics of getting farmers market-quality produce into grocery chains, restaurants and other buyers. Farmers join Local Vendors Coalition for a monthly fee, and the coalition connects the sellers and the buyers.
Granados was inspired to found Local Vendors Coalition, which is a member of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown program, after failing to find locally grown produce in Atlanta grocery stores. Many of the growers he met at Atlanta farmers markets told him they had no avenue into grocery chains that might like to offer their customers locally grown fruits and vegetables because dealing with dozens of small growers was not commercially viable. Granados came up with the idea of Local Vendors Coalition as a path for its members to reach more consumers.
"Today's savvy cooks want the best in homegrown fruits and vegetables for their families," says Granados, who predicts shoppers will see Georgia Grown produce from LVC farmers in more grocery stores in 2013. "Whole Foods is to be congratulated for not only offering locally grown food to its customers but also for supporting the Georgia economy by buying locally."
Shoppers can find Local Vendors Coalition's Georgia Grown produce at Whole Foods Market on 77 West Paces Ferry Road Northwest, Atlanta, 30305.
