The Heard County FFA program recently received some exciting new agriculture equipment thanks to a $78,000 CREQ grant.
The CREQ (Construction-Related Equipment) grant enabled the local FFA chapter to purchase several pieces of state of the art equipment with the biggest prize being a 1655 Massey Ferguson Tractor fully equipped with 11 attachments. It is the very first new tractor that HHS has owned.
Other equipment purchased included a back-up electric power system for the greenhouse, an Aquaculture Start-up System, Computer system with Smart Board Response and several other items.
The FFA Advisor, Dale McWhorter echoed the excitement of the student members about the amazing new equipment: "We would like to thank Chris Edwards, our CTAE (Career, Technical, and Agricultural) Director, the Heard County Board of Education, Superintendent Jerry Prince and the Georgia Deer Farm Equipment Dealership for their support and assistance," stated McWhorter.
FFA looks forward to many big activities this month including FFA Day at the Capital on February 19. An FFA Alumni Representative (Mr. Denny Rogers), Mr. McWhorter, and two students, Joanna Brown and TJ Yarbrough, will attend the State FFA Breakfast. They will also have three Legislative Pages: Jacob Holcombe, Drew Harris, and Tate Gosdin.
Heard County FFA week will then kick off on February 24, 2013 lasting through Friday, March 1.
The FFA Sentinel Katelyn Hull is excited about this year's FFA week and explained what many of the activities will include during that week: "We will have our annual food drive this week with all Heard County Schools participating. This will begin on February 19th and last until Friday March 1st," said Hull.
"We will kick off the week on Monday, the 25th, with a dress-up and hat day. It will cost two cans to wear a hat all day. On Tuesday we will have a t-shirt design contest using this year's "GROW" theme for ideas. Wednesday will provide breakfast for the faculty, and Thursday we will announce our Kindle raffle winner. On Friday, to show our belief and support of no bullying in school, select FFA members will wear No Bullying T-Shirts and have a table during lunch with No Bullying information available," she added.
The 2013 FFA Officers are: President TJ Yarbrough, Vice Presidents Tate Gosdin and Jacob Holcombe, Secretary Joanna Brown, Treasurer Luke Carroll, Reporter Alexus Higgins, Sentinel Katelyn Hull, Parliamentarian Taylor Barnes, Historian Drew Harris, and Chaplain Austin Wright.
