Growers of Vidalia onions are asking the Georgia agricultural commissioner to set the official start date for shipping the trademarked sweet onions as April 15.
Bob Stafford, manager of the Vidalia Onion Business Council, Vidalia, Ga., said March 18 that the council's special committee made the recommendation that morning.
"The recommendation was unanimous," Stafford said.
"There will be some that start shipping a little earlier, but they will be required to have special inspections."
Several growers said in mid-March they plan to begin shipping small volumes on April 8.
Stafford said he thought about 125 acres of the 12,600 Vidalia onion acres planted this season would be shipping on the earlier date.
Matthew Kulinski, director of markets for the Georgia Agriculture Commissioner's office, was not immediately available March 18 to confirm whether the commissioner would approve the April 15 start date.
