Two of the biggest players in Georgias turf grass industry, Jennings Turf Farms, based in Soperton, and Pennington Seed, of Madison, have teamed up again to grow the field for the most watched football game of the year.
The sod used to construct the football field for the 2007 Super Bowl was grown on the same field where farm owner Phillip Jennings grew the sod for the 2005 Super Bowl.
During the first week in January, 100,000 square feet of turf was cut in sheets measuring 42 inches wide by 50 feet long.
The turf was then rolled, loaded and hauled overnight to Miami on 40 flatbed trucks so the sun couldnt dry the grass. After arriving at Dolphin Stadium, the turf was installed like carpet and overseeded to cover the seams.
As in 2005, the foundation for the 2007 Super Bowl field is Penningtons Princess 77 hybrid Bermuda grass. Because Bermuda is dormant in winter, the base sod was overseeded with a mix of Penningtons perennial rye and blue grasses to provide green color and added durability.
In preparation for the big game the grass was mowed daily from October until it was harvested. Jennings estimates his staff spent eight to ten hours a day caring for the grass since October.
Turfgrass has a farm gate value of $150.96 million and was ranked 13th of all Georgia commodities for farm gate value according to a 2005 University of Georgia report.
