EPA proposes registration for new crop protection products
Posted on Jul 09, 2026 at 11:56 AM
In late June, the EPA released proposed registrations for six new herbicides, five of them designed for use over field crops.
The agency’s proposals applied to diflufenican, epyrifenacil, florpyrauxifen-benzyl, isoxaflutole, topramezone and trifludimoxazin.
The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) praised the EPA moves, saying the new products would help farmers contend with weeds that inhibit crop grow.
“Pesticides undergo years of rigorous testing, with very few making it through the approval process,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. “Farmers trust and rely on EPA’s science- and risk-based regulatory process. These new products, backed by the best available science, will enable farmers to do more with less and provide more tools in the toolbox to help ensure an abundant and safe food supply for America’s families.”
UGA Extension Weed Scientist Dr. Stanley Culpepper noted that the EPA’s moves will facilitate both crop production and further study of invasive weeds.
“The results of these prioritizations will help support our family farms as they provide safe and affordable food, feed, fiber, and fuel for our nation and the world,” Culpepper said. “These efforts will also help our weed scientists develop and implement safe and effective weed management programs with greater diversity and sustainability across many crops.”
The Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) provided a brief summary of the proposed registrations:
Diflufenican: EPA published a final rule, with a 60-day comment period, in the federal register on June 30. The final rule establishes tolerances for corn and soybean uses. Click here for more.
Epyrifenacil: EPA published a final rule, with a 60-day comment period, in the federal register on June 30. The final rule establishes tolerances for use in field corn (forage, grain, stover); rapeseed (seed); soybean (forage, hay, seed); wheat (forage, grain, hay, straw). Click here for more information.
Florpyrauxifen-benzyl: EPA posted the document “Memorandum Supporting Proposed Decision to Approve Registration for the First Residential Use of Florpyrauxifen-benzyl” and its supporting documents to be open for public comment until July 11. Click here for more.=
Isoxaflutole: EPA posted the document “Memorandum Supporting Proposed Decision to Approve Registration for the Cotton New Use and Geographic Expansion of Soybean Use of Isoxaflutole” and its supporting documents to be open for public comment until July 27. For more information, click here.
Topramezone: The EPA received an application for registration of topramezone, an HPPD inhibitor (Group 27) herbicide that controls broadleaf weeds, including Palmer amaranth and other pigweeds. Its supporting documents are open for public comment from until July 27 and are available here.
Trifludimoxazin: On June 30, the EPA posted a final response to public comments on trifludimoxazin here. Trifludimoxazin is a herbicide that targets both broadleaf and grassy weeds in major crops like soybeans, corn, and cereals. It is notable for controlling PPO-resistant weed populations and providing both pre-emergent and burndown control.
